Minister: Russia allocates 4.8–4.9 GHz range for 5G only

MOSCOW, Oct 14 (PRIME) -- Russia will allocate the 4.8–4.9 GHz range only for 5G networks, Digital Development Minister Maksut Shadayev said on Wednesday at a forum.

“We have an approved plan of spectrum conversion for 4.7–4.8 GHz. The necessary money is given to develop the samples of arms and military equipment that will go to the other ranges, and the 4.8–4.9 GHz range will be fully given to us,” Shadayev said.

“In this sense, if we do not mention that, certainly, the ‘golden range’ (of 3.4–3.8 GHz, which is taken by the military) would be priority for us, work is arranged for 4.7–4.9 GHz, and my understanding is that we should not have any difficulties in freeing the full range.”

State-controlled telecom operator Rostelecom President Mikhail Oseyevsky said that the bulk of the European part of the country could lack 5G because in order to use the allocated resource to develop this technology, one needs a permit of the bordering states in the boundary zones at the distance of 300 kilometers from the frontier.

The allocated range is used by planes, Oseyevsky said.

“Since the alerting systems for NATO planes work on these ranges, we won’t certainly get such permission from the states of the bloc because we won’t get it from Ukraine,” the executive said.

Oseyevsky also said that rolling out of the networks in the allocated range will consume more money.
